About Us
Ben Sorkin grew up in Philadelphia and Abington, graduating from Abington High School, and attended LaSalle College. He opened up Ben Sorkin Jewelers in 1981. The idea was simple. Treat the customer like you would like to be treated. Starting with a single booth in an exchange, he expanded three times to open in his current location, 705 Sansom Street, on the historic corner of 7th and Sansom. The building was formally the Beck Engraving Company, who provided printing for The Curtis Publishing Company. The Saturday Evening Post, and Parent Magazine among their better selling periodicals. The building began construction before the Civil War, and was completed shortly after the conflict ended. The store is located on the former loading docks that received the enormous rolls of paper used in the printing. As a student of history, Ben has books of historic Philadelphia in the store to browse through. Another hobby is his collection of Hall Of Fame baseballs. The collection is on display in the store and contains over 160 of baseballs’ all time greats. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Jackie Robinson are just a few of the many stars on display. “I have lots of people who come in just to check out the baseballs”, quotes Ben. “I love talking about the game, and how baseball has chronicled the history of The United States”. In 2008 Ben will be married to his wife Gayle for 29 years. Though he often jokes about his wife, he has said that he owes any success in life to her. Ben and Gayle have three wonderful daughters, Michele, Stephanie, and Jillian.
